Green Tourism

Living on an island, one is brought up to realise how precious commodities such as water are, and to be aware of our environment. We have always tried to be committed to good environmental practise and thought that we should take some action to make our guests aware of what we aim to do. We hope that you will share our commitment and maybe take away or feed back some ideas.

Water

·          Tap water in Scilly is good.

·          We have stopped providing bottled water. You will find a jug of tap water in your fridge.

·          Please consider not purchasing bottled water and reduce plastic in the environment.

·          Re-fill bottles with tap water.

·          Please also consider the use of baths and showers and water usage for cleaning teeth etc.

·          Upon departure towels to be laundered should be left in the bath or shower tray; otherwise they will not be changed unnecessarily.

·          We collect rain water for watering our pot plants and garden.

Energy Use

·          Most of our appliances are 'A' rated.

·          Most light bulbs are low energy.

·          Please avoid leaving TVs and other appliances on standby.

Waste and Recycling

·          Glass and cans are recycled.

·          Where possible all kitchen and garden waste is composted, so please discard tea bags, coffee grouts, apple cores, vegetable peelings etc in the pot provided.

·          The use of plastic bins liners has been reduced since separating for composting.

·          Rubbish is crushed to cut down on bins.

·          We have managed to cut down on one bin per week in our trade refuse expenditure since recycling.

·          We re-use plastic bags where possible and always carry cotton bags for shopping.

·          It is expected that Scilly will become 'bag free' in the near future, so please be prepared when you shop for groceries.

·          Our egg trays are returned to the local supplier.

·          Plastic is not yet recycled in Scilly and is therefore burnt in the incinerator. Consider packaging and the unnecessary purchase of plastic items, particularly bottled water.

Cleaning Products

·          We switched to more environmentally friendly cleaning products over three years ago, initially because of allergies to the chemicals in the products, but also to help the environment.

General

·          We use recycled printing paper.

·          Ink cartridges are returned for recycling.

·          Bedding and linens which may be worn too much for guest use are given to charity.

·          Where and when possible we repair rather than replace.

Transport

·          Scilly is an ideal walking or cycling holiday.

·          You will find a community bus timetable in your blue folder.

·           For future visits, you could consider your carbon footprint by leaving the car at home and travelling by train to your stepping-off point.

·          The Scillonian III is the most fuel efficient form of transport to the islands, followed by the fixed wing aircraft and lastly, the helicopter.
